Reducing risk by building socio-emotional competence and resilience
AddressHealth implements the Nurturing Schools Program, a risk reduction strategy in schools. This is AddressHealth’s mental health initiative that addresses the growing burden of mental health issues among children of school-going age. It is a well documented fact that many of the behavioural, emotional, pro-social and peer related problems are better tackled in schools, in group settings, than in clinics.
Â
Nurturing Schools Program adopts a 360 degree approach to reduce the population level risk and burden of socio emotional& mental wellbeing issues in schools.
It consists of the following steps:
-
Screening Standardized globally validated tool used to screen all students to identify those at risk of developing emotional difficulties (like anxiety), social difficulties, hyperactivity problems, behavioural problems and peer problems
-
Workshops for parents Targeted workshops for parents conducted on topics such as :
1. Understanding the learning needs of children;
2. Improving motivation in children to help them achieve their potential
3. Overview of effective discipline
-
School-based workshops For students identified to be ‘at risk’ by screening process, themed group-based workshops conducted by trained psychologists
-
Workshops for teachers Special workshops for teachers who value the emotional wellbeing of their students, an orientation session is also provided to all teachers at the beginning of the program
-
Individual Counseling Children who are in most need, get individual attention and guidance on any diagnostics /assessments to be conducted.
Frequently Asked Question
Have questions about scheduling or what to expect? Here are answers to common inquiries to help you feel fully prepared.
We implement a risk reduction strategy in schools, which screens children for socio-emotional difficulties, provides evidence based group interventions for children identified with difficulties such as hyperactvity, conduct / behavioural issues, social skill deficits, emotional wellbeing issues etc. These are provided by a counseling psychologist. The counseling psychologist also takes up a few children ( identified by teachers/ High scores in screening/ identified during group workshops) for individual counseling as well.
Depending on the need of the school and the contract, our counseling psychologists are placed full time (through the academic year) or part time ( once, twice or thrice a week for 30-32 weeks) with the schools during school working hours.
